About VDI

The idea for this business came to me one day in 2004 when I was driving down from the Bay Area to Los Angeles and came upon a folding chair in the middle of the highway.  It apparently had fallen off an RV or maintenance truck of some kind.  With very little time to react, I managed to swerve enough to avoid a dangerous situation.    After I got safely around the hazard, I asked myself two questions:

  • Could my 16 year old son - who's about to get his driving permit - do what I just did?
  • If he could, where in the world would he have learned how?

The BIG QUESTION for me was, “How do you learn what to do in dangerous situations without actually having to be in danger?”

So I started looking around for a way teens could practice survival skills.  Some kind of interactive driving simulator made sense; one where students could be placed in hazardous conditions, in all kinds of weather, without anybody getting hurt.  There wasn't anything of quality on the market to choose from until I found Raydon Corporation, who had been designing and building simulators for military applications.

Basically, I was a concerned parent before I got into this business looking for something that was hard to find — affordable collision avoidance training taught in a virtual trainer, not a driving simulator.  After all, you can play video games and drive – but it takes a specialized system dedicated to teaching to be effective.

I finally found what I was looking for.  Now I hope you find us.

Sincerely,

Bob Davis
