01.15.08-Owens Corning Implements Virtual Driver Interactive Simulation System to Arm Employees with Life-Saving Defensive Driving Techniques
Local agencies, Ohio State Patrol, Philadelphia Water District and Iroquois Pipeline Operating Company also choose simulation by Virtual Driver Interactive
El Dorado Hills, Calif.—January 15, 2008—Virtual Driver Interactive (VDI), provider of driver improvement and simulation systems for corporations and communities, announced new customers using its Virtual Defensive Driving Course (Virtual DDC) with behind-the-wheel driving in a simulated environment.
VDI's virtual driving instruction allows drivers to gain important insight and hands-on experience driving in potentially hazardous circumstances, essentially putting the driver in dangerous situations without actually putting them in danger. Owens Corning employee, Barry Hornbacher, learned this first-hand and credits the VDI simulation exercise course with saving his life.
VDI's curriculum gave Hornbacher a heightened sense of skills and awareness, preparing him to do the following:
- Hornbacher stopped at a stop sign post to give him adequate distance to see other drivers, allowing him to stop after he started moving into the intersection if he encountered a problem.
- When he entered the four-way stop, he continued looking left and right as he entered the intersection.
Having just practiced earlier in a dangerous situation on VDI's simulator, Hornbacher was now ready for his actual encounter on his way home. "As I entered the intersection a van clearly was not going to stop to my left," said Hornbacher. "I was able to stop and the van slammed on the breaks, skidded and swerved around the front of me, missing me by a very close margin. If I hadn't seen that she was going to miss the sign, she probably would have hit me directly on my driver's side door. I was conscious of the training the simulator gave before, during and after the near miss."
"Barry's experience is similar to many testimonials we have received and it confirms what we already know--our simulators and curriculum give invaluable training that saves lives," said Bob Davis, president of Virtual Driver Interactive.
Local agencies, Ohio State Patrol, Philadelphia Water District, and Iroquois Pipeline Operating Company have also realized the importance of driver improvement simulation courses and have chosen to implement VDI simulators into their workforces.
