Get The Most From Employee Training

Simulation is a robust, effective training tool.  It allows a trainee to interact with a replica of a real-world situation, environment, process or system.  Learning occurs when the trainee observes the outcomes to these inputs, refining performance over time.

Simulation delivery devices range from desktop computers to sophisticated, immersive virtual reality equipment.  Desktop versions allow a trainee to manipulate variables and observe outcomes without interacting with simulated equipment.  In contrast, simulators allow trainees to develop cognitive and motor skills by interacting with a partial or full mock-up.  Both approaches rely on computerized models to predict the behavior of various scenarios.

Computer technology has propelled simulation into highly efficient and effective learning tools that are increasingly common in training programs.  Among the benefits:

  1. Simulation provides a safe alternative to real-world training.  This is especially true for situations where a mistake can put the trainee and others in life-threatening situations.
  2. Simulation often is more cost-effective than real-world  training.  Recreating experiences in a real-world setting is often costly due to time, risk and manpower requirements.
  3. Simulation allows for rapid variation in training parameters.  For example, an emergency vehicle simulation can instantaneously switch between day and night, clear and fog, rain and snow, normal operation and vehicle system failures.
  4. Simulation can accommodate various knowledge and experience levels.  Part-task simulation typically is applied during early skill acquisition eventually progressing to full-task simulation.  This is particularly valuable when learning to operate intricate systems or making decisions in complicated situations.
  5. Replay capabilities offer unique feedback.   Trainees can review performance in detail, fast-forwarding, slowing or pausing.  This is particularly powerful for team-based training where multiple individuals interact in a coordinated response.
  6. Simulation provides a motivating practice environment.  Simulations make repeated practice interesting and relevant - and as a result improve trainee confidence and performance.
  7. Simulation provides for excellent transfer of training to the work environment.  Because simulation replicates the real world, it facilitates immediate transfer of skills.
